These work by reading sections of the files and never modifying the original file. Reaper, and most DAWs, are Non-Linear Editors (NLEs). There's other limitations with this all stemming from the concept that Audacity modifies the wav file it's editing permanently. Did you cut a whole part out of the file and now you realize you want it back? Well you'll have to open your backup WAV file, find that part, and re-import it to audacity. This means that any changes made to the audio files in Audacity are saved to the wav files you're editing. One major difference between Audacity and Reaper is that Audacity is a Linear Editor. It gives you tools that improve speed, editing techniques, lower CPU usage, better workflows, and more creativity by having less things the software can't do.

I know "feature set" sounds really vague, but it relates to a lot of other aspects. What makes a program like Reaper better than free softwareįeature set, documentation, frequent updates, no limitations on the software, and a product that will do everything you need it to do. Even if you're committed to Audacity long-term, you should consider financially supporting that product, especially if / when your podcast makes money. Someone else is paying for your use of Audacity through sponsorships and other deals out of a moral commitment to the idea of free software utilities. Well firstly, it's not "Extra" cost, it's just cost.
